Early Shogi tournaments were plagued by unusual pairing criteria. One tournament in Holland used the expectation of an interesting game (as determined by the organizer) as the main criterion. Even such criteria could be fine, though, as long as they are announced beforehand, and applied consistently and reproducibly. Ciao, Pieter
