From: Rikard Nordgren ETEK CHALMERS SE> Date: 29 nov 2001 Subject: Re: ELO System Thanks for the information. Martin Danerud Showed me a complete list of the grade steps from a German paper. Why isn't this information on the web as well as an ELO-calculator (or is it?)? The old rating page by Eric Cheymol was very good and complete. Rikard > The Pan-Atlantic rating system, used thruout Europe and the U.S. (and to some extent in other countries), uses the following numbers as the midpoints of the Dan ranks: 1 Dan 1740, 2 Dan 1860, 3 Dan 2000, 4 Dan 2160, 5 Dan 2340, 6 Dan 2540. In most cases, reaching those numbers earns one the corresponding rank, subject to having been above the lower bound of that rank for a certain number of games. Note that the ranks get progressively wider as you go up. Similarly, the kyu ranks become progressively narrower until reaching the minimum width of 80 points. This is all in line with the Japanese custom of requiring progressively more wins for each promotion. > The Internet "ShogiDojo" uses these midpoints: 1 Dan 1600, 2 Dan 1800, 3 Dan 2000 etc.; 1 kyu 1500, 2 kyu 1400, 3 kyu 1300 etc. Their ratings are generally about 400 points lower than PanAtlantic ratings for the same people (somewhat less at the top and more at the bottom). > Larry Kaufman >
