The tournament attracted not less than 18 participants, which is a new record. Worth noticing is that not less than six players were beginners playing their very first shogi tournament. Richard Bjerke, the only Norwegian player this year, who has developed recently and Jan Palmgren, one of the rising stars in Swedish shogi who beat not less then four dan players in the EC/MSO earlier this year, made interesting starts. The tournament was played with the Swiss pairing system, which meant that the lower rated half had to face the higher rated half in the first round. Out of eight games, (Rickard Nordgren had to forfeit on walk over in the first round) there was one surprise, namely Jonas Ahlqvist who in his first tournament game ever managed to win against Mikael Jansson. The second round had some more surprises, when Jan Palmgren lost to Per Kristiansson and Jonas Ahlqvist won again this time against Rickard Nordgren, remaining unbeaten as a shogiplayer. At the top tables in the third round Rickard Bjerke managed to win against Jonas Ahlqvist and I won against Martin Danerud leaving two players unbeaten after the first day, namely Richard and me while most of the other higher rated players had reached two points. In round four Richard won his game against me making him an undisputed leader. He was now followed by a group of five players on three points, Martin Danerud, Anders Vidal, Tor Gammelgard, Jonas Ahlqvist (who won again in the fourth round - simply refusing to accept being a beginner) and me. Martin Danerud made the tournament even more exciting when he won in the fifth round against Richard Bjerke. This left the outcome of the tournament wide open with four players sharing the lead with four points out of five, Richard Bjerke, Martin Danerud, Anders Vidal and me. In the last round Richard Bjerke outplayed Jan Palmgren, but blundered his rook in a won position and lost. The game between Anders Vidal and me was very tough, but when Anders missed a winning sacrifice the game turned around giving me the win and also the first place in the tournament. If he had played this move (which he first intended to) he would have won the tournament since Martin Danerud lost a better posistion to Robert Soderberg in his final game. Instead I won as the sole player on five points. The two other medal places went to Rickard Bjerke who got one SDOS point more than Martin Danerud who got the third and last nice cup made of pure tin. Tor Gammelgard who scored four points won the rating price for players between 6-kyu and 10-kyu and Jonas Ahlqvist who also scored impressive four points won the rating price for the group 11-kyu to 15-kyu. For pairing we used a program called Swiss Perfect. I can highly recommend using this, since it is very simple to use (windows environment), is very quick, makes nice printouts and can also be used to automatically generate html-pages. It can be downloaded from http://www.swissperfect.com/. It costs 49 dollars but can be evaluated for free in 30 days. A personal impression from the tournament is that there are hordes of strongly underrated Swedes at the moment. Some players should in my opinion have 300 to 500 Elo points more and I'm not talking about players with preliminary 400 Elo points. This is caused by the constant inflow of beginners, mostly chessplayers who quickly reach a pretty high level. I hope that all players participating had a good time and that we will attract even more players next year. Perhaps sthere is someone who wants to be the first player from central Europe?
