Linkoping is the present home town of the ruling Swedish = Champion from year 2000, Peter Kaneko. The Swedish Championship play-off was hosted by a game = event, LinCon 2001, which had 1300 participants all together. Thus it became = the biggest=20 game event ever in Sweden. Shogi at a game event was a great success, = and=20 twelve new shogi disciples became members of the Swedish Shogi = Federation. At=20 least fifty persons were taught the rules of the game, and the majority = of the participants=20 at the event has added some impressions of shogi, Japanese chess, to = their=20 knowledge about games. The challenger semifinal was perhaps the toughest game for Thore. Robert = Soderberg got some good positions, where he seemed to have the better chances of = winning. However, Thore succeeded to counter attack, and Robert eventually lost the game. Carl Johan Nilsson won the Swedish Championship tournament, and by the = 19 participants of the Swedish Championship betting competition he was appointed the = clear favourite to win the play-off. However, Carl Johan got a position without = attacking possibilities in=20 the Challenger final, and in order to free himself, he displaced his = defending generals,=20 and eventually he lost. Peter Kaneko was trying his best to defend his title in the best-of-five = games Swedish=20 Championship final match. However, Thore won the final with 3 to 1 after = dominating=20 three and a half of the four final games. Peter only succeeded to reach = his patent, Japanese- style, attack on the enemy king in the end of the third game of the = final, which he won. In the other final games he was kept back by a safe defence by Thore. Peter = also lost depth=20 in his games due to his eager moves, which probably cost him the victory = of the second game of the final. Finally, however, Thore turned out to be the man of = the weekend, and his old Stockholm friend Jonas Sandbom turned out to be the winner of = the betting competition, since he was the only one who had Thore Angqvist as the winner of the = final with 3 to 1. Thore has promised to be an active Swedish Champion of shogi, and we = hope to see him in the Swedish as well as the international competitions during the = coming year. Finally, the Swedish Shogi Federation continues to grow. We have got a = lot of new members during the last months, and now there will be regular shogi meetings in = four Swedish cities: Goteborg, Stockholm, Trollhattan, and Linkoping.
