Habu Yoshiharu's Elo performance for the tournament was 2455. This perfo=
rmance, if it holds up,
places him just barely among the world's best 1,000 chess players, and th=
e best from Japan (the
current best is Watanabe Akira, although the best historically among acti=
ve players has been Domingo Ramos).
The current Pan-Atlantic shogi ratings would indicate that a 2455 corresp=
onds to an amateur 5-dan.
(To judge whether this is valid, the average tournament chessplayer is a =
1500, or about a 2-kyu.
I believe Habu had a previous partial FIDE rating from last year's C=
hicago Open, which was somewhat lower (low 2300s I believe), so his actua=
l FIDE rating should be somewhere in between, perhaps around 2400. 2400 =
is an important number, because it is the minimum rating necessary for th=
e International Master title (though there are other requirements which H=
abu has not met). My own FIDE rating is 2422, so there is some chance th=
at Habu may take away my "title" of top rated chess player among "strong"=
(say amateur 3 dan or better) shogi players.
