Subject: Japanese Numerals

Dear Friends,

    I have a question regarding notation: In Japanese games I see positions
recorded by the Japanese character (presumably in Kanji) and a Hindu-Arabic
or Roman numeral.  Is there not a native Japanese numbering system that
predates the introduction of these Occidental methods -- and wouldn't it be
somehow more authentic or traditional?
