Also for the reason of possible dropouts, western-chess rules often provide for "adjusted strength of schedule"--if one of your opponents has an unplayed game (forfeit, bye, whatever), you count him as having drawn (earned half a point in that round). You still get 0 for your own unplayed games, of course.
