Sam, and anyone interested in US,

When you look for Japan-related goods, there are several companies/shops
which cater to Japanese people living abroad (like me).  They are
the places to go, rather than big US retail stores.  And today most of
them have web sites.

Global IME is usually enough for simple use, but I heard it works only
with Micro$oft products.  If you really need it,
www.users-side.com/shopping/software/os.htm offers Japanese Windows.
Unfortunately this site is Japanese only.  You need Global IME or
Netscape 4.x to view it first on English windows.

shopping.usfl.com/Store is another site also offering J-win.
This site is Japanese only, too.  Both users-side and usfl ship to
anywhere within US.  (And if you are outside CA/NY, sales tax is exempted!:)

Unrelated note: www.fujisan.com is popular among Japanese in US, but
this site does not seem to have software.  I just found Shogi board
and pieces are here.  Wooden piece: US$18.  Board: US$16.
This site is English-ready (click "English" on top), ship to anywhere
within US.

Dear Sam,

It really depends on what you really like to do on PC, but the best way to
use Japanese language on the foreign environment is not to use Windows
Japanese version. Please check the following site for Global IME:

On Win2000, you don't even need Global IME. You can type in Japanese in
Word2000, Internet Explorer (in input fields) and Outlook Express. If you
are using WinNT, 95, 98, etc, you need Global IME and can use Word2000, etc.
Of course, this is very much limited use of PC, but as long as you write and
read e-mails and search something on the web by using Japanese keywords,
this is good enough.
