Dear shogi friends,

Shogi will not increase in = popularity in the=20 West over night explosively. Especially, that will not happen =
if we do not do anything. On the = other hand, if=20 we continue our efforts, shogi will spread continuously
little by little. The Swedish Shogi = Federation=20 now has more than 120 members, and we are=20 still growing.

This evening, we performed once = again one of our=20 mass distribution campaigns about shogi. In the 50,000
inhabitants Swedish city of Trollhattan, where there are now regular shogi = meetings,=20 Mr Robert Soderberg and
myself distributed hundreds=20 of the Swedish Shogi Federation leaflets about shogi (with added lines = about the=20
activities in Trollhattan and the upcoming February = 23-24=20 Swedish Championship tournament with three tickets to
Japan at stake). We stood at the entrance of the = Swedish=20 League bandy match between Gripen
and Katrineholm. As you may know, bandy is the game = with=20 hooked clubs played by skating players on
a soccer field sized ice rink, a game popular in = Sweden,=20 Russia, Finland, and Norway.

We were assisted by the radiant Ms Yasuko Hara, a = Japanese=20 diploma worker (and amateur shogi player)
who lives temporarily in=20 Trollhattan.

Thus, hundreds of persons will get a better grip on = shogi. All=20 the way from "It is Japanese chess" over "It is =
a chess related game with flat pieces with Japanese=20 characters" and "I know the rules" to "I am a shogi=20
player". All those levels of knowledge are = important for=20 the future spreading of shogi in the West.

Finally, I hope to have inspired you to do something = similar.=20 We will certainly continue at sport events, in
shopping centers, and at other events where a lot of = people=20 are gathered. For every such effort, shogi will spread
continuously, little by little.

Sincerely yours,

Dr. Martin Danerud
