This performance, if it holds up, places him just barely among the world's best 1,000 chess players, and the best from Japan (the current best is Watanabe Akira, although the best historically among active players has been Domingo Ramos). The current Pan-Atlantic shogi ratings would indicate that a 2455 corresponds to an amateur 5-dan. (To judge whether this is valid, the average tournament chessplayer is a 1500, or about a 2-kyu.
