From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 24 apr 2001 Subject: Results from the Swedish Championship tournament Dear shogi friends, During the weekend, April 21-22, the Swedish Championship tournament was played in Goteborg. For the first time ever, the tournament was played in a public area, an indoor square of the big shopping mall Nordstan. The tournament had seven rounds and the thinking time was 45 min + 40 s byo-yomi. The tournament used Swiss pairing based on ELO points. We enjoyed a lot of attention from the public, especially during Saturday. Around one hundred persons got the rules of shogi explained to them, games were sold, and thousands of persons are still confused about what they saw. The winner of the tournament will be the Swedish representative at the tournament in New York in October. The top three players are qualified for the Swedish Championship play-off, May 24-27, in Linkoping. The result of the tournament was very clear. The superior winner was Carl Johan Nilsson. He has improved his shogi even more, and he well deserved to win all his seven games. The two other players who qualified for the play-off were Thore Angqvist and Robert Soderberg, both with five points. Another tendency was that the general standard of the Swedish shogi players has increased even more since last year. Unfortunately we did not get a new record of participants, since six players withdrew from the tournament during the last days. However, the sixteen Swedish participants enjoyed a very nice tournament, and we will beat the record next year in Stockholm instead. Our most charming participant this year was a young lady from our junior shogi activity in Goteborg. Only nine year old Ragna Lofgren will become a strong shogi player in the future. She escaped the last place, and already this year she had good chances of winning several of the games which she eventually lost against her much older opponents.
