I still remember the first Meijin match I followed. I lived in Japan in 1994, I had just started to play shogi in April, and the Meijin match between Habu and Yonenaga dominated the professional scene. There was a general feeling that it was a turning point for shogi. Young players were about to take over the title matches. I did not understand the games very well, but Habu became my favourite of that match. I do not have the same feeling for any of the players in the Meijin match 2001, but nevertheless I will follow every move, since I have learnt that the players have to create something extra in the games of the Meijin matches. The games are always exciting and almost never one-sided. I will just enjoy the games this year. Thanks again, Eric! Sincerely yours, Martin Danerud, Sweden
