Although for both the Dutch and the European Shogi Championships, an
"open" (Swiss) championship is associated with the "closed" (KO)
championship (in case of the closed ESC, the open counterpart is the
MSOWSC), both the Dutch and the European Champions are determined by
a pure KO system. The advantage of combining a KO and a (biased)
Swiss event is that players that are eliminated during the KO can
still compete in the open tournament.
