A theoretical novelty? Have you been promoting shogi for a year or more? If so, have you approached 64 newbies? >the end of the third year, 16,384 new players. of the fourth year, 30K new >players are possible. Yowza! Do you have anywhere near those numbers in the chess circuit of Portland, OR? We are mostly talking about recruiting chessplayers for shogi, so that would be necessary for those numbers to hold up. >This is, by far, a real >stretch of imagination and a rather optimistic view, *Rather*, to say the least! We here in Ohio find 64 to be "rather" optimistic, but 30K is just some sort of dreamy fantasy. >but I feel that it is possible. Amen. This all requires that there is an "exponential effect," and I'm sure a LOT of American shogi players can tell you that there aren't that many organizers out there, so this idea of exponential growth is "rather" unrealistic. Truth is, most chess organizers will tell you the same thing. There aren't that many of us out there. And another great dilemma for you and me is that even if you build the empire, you'll spend even more energy trying to SUSTAIN it. >Promoting something that you believe in and have the time and resources >for, >is fun. No doubt. It's good to see there are energetic shogi organizers on the west coast. BTW, we Ohioans already claim the OSC title, so try not to call your club the Oregon Shogi Club! (^_^) >setting up. However, I have done similar, by creating tournaments and >leagues for other similar enjoyable life and time fulfilling pleasurable >undertakings (mental and physical). Yes, but have you had any shogi tournaments? How many? How big? >What is a "die hard shogi player" in your mind? I'm not sure that "die >hard" is what I am looking for. "Die hard" means playing shogi at least every month. Then there's "gung ho," "addict," "fanatic," etc. So, by this definition, "die hard" is the minimum that you should go for, but you should aim even higher ("addict" is pretty good). >What is your proposal for generating new >Shogi players or for converting or diversafying the Chess players ability? IMHO, to generate new shogi players, you need to teach everybody you can, get the word out about your club and events to EVERYONE, and try to find at least 1 or 2 partners to help you find more creative promotional ideas as well as help you with the nitty gritty stuff that goes with promoting and organizing. >By the way, there are many writings (old & new) about Shogi, written in >English. Many? Not by chess standards, that's for sure!
