From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 28 jun 2000 Subject: Meijin match game 7 MARUYAMA MEIJIN!! The shogi world has a new meijin! Maruyama became the 11th meijin since the introduction of the meijin tournament system in 1937 by winning the decisive 7th game of the 58th meijin match against Sato Yasumitsu. Maruyama "won" the furigoma and with the black pieces the game started for the fourth time this match with the Kakugawari opening. It was a game that resembled the pattern in the other Kakugawari games with Maruyama attacking and Sato defending. This time Sato was not able to completely stop Maruyama's attack and Maruyama won in 143 moves. More details on the game after reading next week's Shukan Shogi.
