Regards Nosovsky ---- End Original Message ---- Hi Nosovsky-san, I have started a vigorous effort to improve my openings, which were again a problem for me in New York recently. Although I don't have a great answer for you, I can tell you what I do know. From the ISPS (thanks!) I recently acquired "Guide To Shogi Openings," which is a bilingual book (Japanese and English) written by a professional named Aono Teruichi. The book is translated by none other than John Fairbairn, the author of "Shogi For Beginners." These two also teamed up to make "Shogi Openings Without Tears," which I am hoping to find someday. GSO, as I call it, covers 6 Double Static Rook openings and 2 Ranging Rook openings. It does so with step-by-step problems, which are excellent in embedding the variations in one's memory. Another good source for openings is Tony Hosking's "Art Of Shogi." It actually is more in-depth than GSO, and covers all the openings about 15-20 moves deep. The thing about this book is that it mentions ESO - Encyclopediae of Shogi Openings. I really want to know what this is, and where I could find it. I don't have a copy handy, but maybe in this book there is a reference to where ESO can be found (does anybody know?). Maybe this is the pot of gold you search for (as do I). I have some other opening books, but they're all in Japanese and I haven't learned Japanese (yet!). Good luck on your search.
