From: Glen Miner UNDERGRAD MATH UWATERLOO CA> Date: 28 jan 2000 Subject: WinShogi has been released! About WinShogi: WinShogi is a totally free Microsoft Windows version of Shogi. WinShogi's features include: - A simple and intuitive graphical user interface. - Both Kanji (Japanese) and Glyph (Western) artwork. - Multi-player games over a TCP/IP network. - Spectators in multi-player games. - A second-generation computer opponent supporting multi-processing (under Windows NT) and multi-computing (over a TCP/IP network). - Time limited and handicapped games. - Intelligent automatic promotion. - Automatic perspective adjustment between turns. - Right click online help for showing valid moves. - Also included are detailed instructions for playing Shogi. Please note that this is the first public release; until now, only a handful of people have had access to WinShogi. Although we have made every effort to ensure that it is bug-free, it is quite likely that some bugs slipped by us. As such, we'd really appreciate hearing about any bugs or problems you find. Similarly, the computer opponent's weighing system will probably need some adjustment. If you notice the computer making certifiably stupid moves even when set to intermediate or better, we would really appreciate hearing about it. The best way to report a brain-bug is to email us the exported the turn history of a game in which the brain acted stupid (please see the documentation for more information). System Requirements: WinShogi was designed to be totally Win32 native. Its minimum system requirements are: - Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft Windows 2000, Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft Windows 98. NOTE: The TCP/IP network protocol must be installed (if you're reading this, chances are you're okay). - A video display running at a resolution of 800x600 or larger (640x480 is too small). - Approximately half of a mega-byte of free disk space. Other 32-bit flavours of Microsoft Windows may be supported but have not been tested due to inaccessibility issues. Getting WinShogi: Both packaged binaries and the original source can be found on the WinShogi Home Page: http://nexus.carleton.ca/~ttidman/WinShogi/ As always, feedback (good or bad) would be appreciated. Sincerely, The WinShogi Team
