From: "'Marc Theeuwen'" AMSINC COM> Date: 27 feb 2000 Subject: Re: Results Dutch Championship 2000 Dear Doug, The Dutch Championship are a pure knockout tournament, where all players are paired according to their ranking. The top 3 of the list consisted of the 1999 Champion and the 1999 numbers 3 and 4 (the 1999 runner up did not participate this year). All other players were ranked according to their ELO rating. The playing scheme was as follows: 1-16 8-9 4-13 5-12 2-15 7-10 3-14 6-11 | | | | | | | | +--+--+ +--+--+ +---+---+ +--+--+ | | | | +------+------+ +-------+-------+ | | +---------------+----------------+ | The idea behind this scheme, which is quite standard in elimination type of tournaments, is that the supposedly strongest opponents meet in the finals for the first time and that in each rounds the two players in the middle challenge each other as they might be equally strong, and their rating differences might just be statistical noise. All players that are eliminated keep on playing in the side tournament which has the normal Swiss pairings, where rounds played in the knock-out tournament are taken into consideration. Basically the pairings of the knock-out tournament are a prescheduled part of the bigger Swiss system. Hopefully this explains sufficiently how the format in the Dutch Championship works. Maybe you could explain exactly how it works, since I'm a little confused. I suppose there's a way to "crack the code" by looking at the results, but I don't have the energy or time to do it. If your format is a really good one, I think we should introduce it into American tournaments, because some of our elimination tournaments here have suffered when eliminated players find it frustrating to find an opponent under appropriate tournament conditions. Thanks for your help!
