From: Colin Paul Adams COLINA DEMON CO UK> Date: 3 feb 2000 Subject: CHU: revised solution to A7 Once again, the computer doesn't exactly agree with the published solutions. First, the principal continuation that the computer found (in 32 minutes) was: 1. +DH x 11d, K - 12a 2. +VM - 7f, +DK x 7f 3. FK x 7f, GB - 9d 4. FK x 9d, K - 12b 5. Ln x 10d, +L x 10d 6. FK - 12g, B - 12d 7. +DH x 12d, K - 12a 8. +DH - 11c, +L - 12f (until that move, the computer had been following the alternative solution, which gave Ln - 12b or 12c as a defence, but that lead to an immediate choice of mates) 9. FK x 12f, Ln - 12b 10. FK x 12b Mate (in 19, as opposed to 17 with the inferior defence) As for the defence of 3. ..., SM - 10c, this leads to mate in a further 9 moves (just as in the published primary solution), which is mate in 15 moves in total. So no real surprises here, just an improved defence. -- Colin Paul Adams Preston Lancashire
