A long time ago, someone told me the reason.
All chess variants on FICS or ICS are limited to 8x8 boards because in the software the board is hard coded 8x8.
It would be a very difficult programming effort to change that now considering there is not much demand.
Just like there is not much demand for shogidojo to program more features for non-Japanese.
