From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 13 dec 2000 Subject: Congratulations from Sweden Dear shogi friends, I hereby want to bring forward the warmest congratulations to Mr Terje Christoffersen on behalf of the Swedish Shogi Federation. His perfect record at the second Italian Open Championship was an impressive achievement from a player, whom we have seen grow in strength during the last years. However, even if it is a rare achievement for a kyu player to win an international tournament with dan player competition, it is not unique. The most prominent earlier example of such an achievement, to my knowledge, was the British Open 1999, which was won by another Viking shogi player, Mr Carl Johan Nilsson, also with six points out of six. That tournament victory made Carl Johan a 1-dan player, and left 3-dan players like Tony Hosking and Les Blackstock beaten behind. During the EC/MSOWSC 2000 in London Carl Johan became a 2-dan player. Sincerely yours, Dr. Martin Danerud President of the Swedish Shogi Federation
