From: Nick Bardsley KEYNOTE CO UK> Date: 31 aug 2000 Subject: Re: Tsui Shogi = Chu Shogi ? Michael, Answers: 1. Tsui Shogi is, indeed, Chu 2. Murray mistakenly believed the game was played with drops. I believe at some point Murray or Gollon (can't remember which) played the game with drops and discovered that it made no sense (most of the pieces simply don't come into play). 3. The description is inaccurate in several important respects (quite apart from drops and an inaccurate piece array). An accurate (apart from one rather obscure point or two that really need not concern a beginner) description of Chu can be found at: www.ed.ac.uk/~rjhare/shogi/chu-shogi/intro.html More info can be found at: www.colina.demon.co.uk/chulib.html You might also consider subscribing to the egroup shogivar at www.egroups.co.uk Regards, Nick Bardsley > > Dear Shogi-L, > > In Chapter 23 of Gollon's book, citing Murray as his > source, Gollon > describes a variant of "Japanese great chess" he calls Tsui Shogi and > translates as "Intermediate Shogi."
