'nifu' means 'two pawns' (actually, the kanji 'fu' means 'step' as an abbreviation for 'step-soldier' but it's usually rendered as 'pawn') and it means the illegal position arising when you drop a pawn on a file with an unpromoted pawn of your own. The question is mainly whether illegal moves should be taken back or lose the game. > At this point I know how the pieces move ... and probably not much else. > To my knowledge there is not a club close to me. Hmm, you could start playing in the shogi ladder to get some confidence. I wouldn't be too worried about the rules, most of the problems are actually academic (i.e., they turn up too seldom to be of real importance). If this worries you, just kill the thread ;-) Best Edi -- zzz. |\ _,,,---,,_ /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_. |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-' '---''(_/--' `-'\_)
