From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 8 oct 1999 Subject: Re: David Murphy passed away I have nothing much to add to the messages already sent to the list, but I want to share my sadness at hearing this news with you all. David was indeed one of the nicest persons I have ever met and a great shogi player on top of it. For me, he was one of the toughest opponents in Europe. I almost never beat him and regardless the result of the game he would bewilder me in the analysis afterwards with long and difficult variations I never knew were there. I always considered David to have the deepest understanding of the game of all European players. If time limits for European tournament games would not have been that strict, I am convinced he would have added many more European titles to the crown he won in 1990. Most of the games David lost were games where he outplayed his opponent for most of the game, only to give his advantage away in byoyomi. I always hoped that David would reconsider his decision to stop playing tournaments, since we could learn so much from him. His great work in translating Japanese texts partly made up for this absence. It saddens me deeply that both David's tournament play and his translation work will no longer be a part of the European Shogi scene.
