From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 4 oct 1999 Subject: Results from Malmo Open Dear shogi friends, Slowly but successfully, shogi is gaining a footing in southern Sweden. = During the last years, shogi has been established in Goteborg and Stockholm quite easily. But = for some reason that process seems to be more difficult in southern Sweden. One small = step forward was the international shogi tournament, Malmo Open, that was played this weekend = in Malmo. There were three players from Goteborg, two Norwegians and one player from = Malmo. Because of sudden illness and unexpected professional duties during the weekend for = expected car=20 drivers and players, unfortunately we lost a dozen (!) of pre-registered = players during the last=20 couple of days before the start of the tournament.=20 Results: 1. Martin Danerud 1-dan 2+ 5+ 6+ 4+ 3+ = 5 10 =20 2. Carl Johan Nilsson 1-dan 1- 6+ 4+ 3+ 5+ = 4 6 =20 3. Efraim Laksman 15-kyu 6+ 4+ 5- 2- 1- = 2 2 4. Terje Christoffersen 8-kyu 5+ 3- 2- 1- 6+ = 2 2 5. Antje Rapmund 9-kyu 4- 1- 3+ 6+ 2- = 2 2 6. Martin Eriksson 14-kyu 3- 2- 1- 5- 4- = 0 0 The columns represent number, name, rating, results in the five rounds, = points, and SDOS. This small tournament was played in a very nice atmosphere. Between the = rounds, we=20 enjoyed meals and even an excursion to the newly constructed Oresund = bridge, joining Sweden and Denmark, together. >From my point of view, the games of this tournament displayed relatively = good shogi. The=20 twelve year old junior player Eriksson from Goteborg did not score any = points, but he showed an enormous progress compared to the Swedish Championship in February. = The two Norwegians Christoffersen and Rapmund (rated 1-dan and 2-dan = respectively in go) showed that their performances in London and Leiden were based on a real = progress in playing strength. The Malmo player Laksman was the tournament sensation with an = undisputable victory against Christoffersen. Laksman is a strong junior chess player, = and if he can improve the shape of his shogi just a little, he will soon become a = dan-player. The two top players came in as expected, but we really had to play well to win our = games. November 20-21, we welcome the shogi players of Europe to Stockholm = Open, arranged=20 by the shogi club in Stockholm. = Sincerely yours, Dr. = Martin Danerud = President of the Swedish Shogi Federation
