i have a similar problem w/ certain e-mails when i use my windows mail
program (pine does not have this problem, score one for linux).
my mail program (i use pegasus, a free mail program that i have found to
be better than most others) has an option to "wrap long lines" and another
to "reformat text".  you might want to try one of those.  i have never
looked at the sending programs that create these long lines and if people
want me to, i could, but the answer will still be the same.  certain
programs interpret the soft return differently, and therefore create the
long lines.
the option to wrap long lines is under netscape preferences>>mail &
newsgroups>>messages.
