From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 22 nov 1999 Subject: Results from Stockholm Open 1999 Dear shogi friends, This year, Stockholm Open was arranged by the Stockholm Shogi Club. Unfortunately, we lost some participants to a chess tournament at the same place, Stockholms Schacksalonger, but at the same time we could enjoy several spectators during the Saturday games. Among the spectators some chess grandmasters could be seen, for instance the Swedish number one chess player for almost thirty years, Ulf Andersson. The tournament was won by the winner of last year, Carl Johan Nilsson, who was simply the best player this time. He was followed by three surprises. Robert Soderberg already plays like a dan player in the endgame, and he has developed in each tournament since he started to play in the beginning of this year. Jonas Sandbom was a bit lucky to score four points, but he is a strong chess player, chess organizer, junior chess trainer, and chess arbiter, and he will become a dan player if he can spend the time needed for it. Jan Palmgren won four games and could actually have won two more games in this tournament. Jan is a world class renju player, and he will certainly become a dan player, but he still needs to analyze every single position, since he does not have the "chess game feeling" yet. The other eight participants made the tournament possible by participating. And this time that was well awarded to Mr Ronny Lindkvist, who in his first tournament won one of the fine prizes generously given to us by the Japanese embassy in Stockholm, in a final lottery including all participants present at the prize giving ceremony. The Swedish shogi players now look forward to the second Swedish Championship tournament, which will be played at the same place as Stockholm Open, April 7-9 next year. The top three players will then be qualified to take part in the Swedish Championship play-off in Sandviken, June 1-4, together with the ruling Swedish Champion Karl Johan Moberg. Sincerely yours, Dr. Martin Danerud President of the Swedish Shogi Federation
