From: Nick Bardsley ICC CO UK> Date: 16 nov 1999 Subject: Re: Capturing a Chu Lion Your later apology notwithstanding, I think it is useful to look at = these complex rules. On my recollection of the rules the second case (B) = you gave I immediately thought must be illegal because once the Lion has = moved to a (1) square, the 8 squares surrounding it become (2) squares, = whether they were (1) squares to begin with or not. (This isn't = explicitly stated, at least I don't think I've seen it, but it does seem = the most natural interpretation.) This being so, the usual rules = concerning a Lion on a (2) square (relative to the Lion seeking to = capture) would come into force. As for the first case (A), I have MSM, and perhaps should look at it = before commenting, but I still have an imperfect understanding of what = igui actually is. Is it a capture on a (1) square and then a move back = to the start square? Or is it a genuinely motionless capture? These two = interpretations are equivalent aren't they? There is no implication re = check (because it doesn't exist as a pinning rule and of course the = Lion, on the first interpretation, returns to block the King-threatening = piece). So what is igui? Hold on, I'm misreading you (t'ink) - are you asking if the Lion can = capture an opposing Lion on a (1) square and then stay on that (1) = square? If you are and in your apology you said it was not legal, why = ever not? It is legal to capture a Lion on a (1) square defended or not, = and the Lion is not impelled to exercise its second step option whether = that would leave it in danger or not, surely? Or is it? Clearly, I'll = have to check MSM but if a capture on a (1) square (and this must apply = re any enemy piece, not just enemy Lions) can only occur through igui or = a two-step 'capture, move on' motion, it stops the Lion from simply = occupying certain (1) squares occupied by enemy pieces at the end of its = move. That is an interesting, to say the least, restriction... (Though = probably, thinking about it, only relevant re enemy Lions.) Nick Bardsley ---------- From: Colin Paul Adams[SMTP:colin COLINA DEMON CO UK] Sent: 15 November 1999 08:52 To: SHOGI-L TECHUNIX TECHNION AC IL Subject: Capturing a Chu Lion I thought I really knew the rules for Lion capturing Lion at Chu Shogi. But I have just now looked carefully at the wording in MSM, and it appears it doesn't actually cover all the cases: A) If a Lion is on a (1) square, can the Lion capture it and stay where it is? (I have always assumed yes, but in fact the rules only mention moving on (or back) after capturing). B) If a Lion is on a (1) square, can the Lion move to another (adjacent) (1) square, and then capture it? (This seems silly, but I am a writing a computer program, so this case also must be covered). The rule 4(c) only mentions capture by igui, or capture and move on. I have always assumed that the two cases above were also covered by rule 4(c), but actually they are not mentioned at all. -- Colin Paul Adams Preston Lancashire
