"Ote" is such a movie. Must have come out around '91. "Ote" is the shogi equivalent of "check" in chess, and the movie is about the exploits of a shogi pro (or would-be pro, I forget) played by former boxer Hidekazu Akai. Features a game of one of the huge variants (25x25, as I remember), a whole bunch of interesting characters, and some hysterical Osaka dialect. Highly recommended. Now, what are the chances of there being a English-subtitled version?
