From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 16 may 1999 Subject: Karl Johan Moberg Swedish Champion! Dear shogi friends, May 13-16, the Swedish Shogi Championship play-off was held in Malmo in southern Sweden in parallel with the chess tournament Limhamn Open. Ronny Thornvall (3-kyu) had to stay out of the play-off because of sudden illness the day before the first round, and he was substituted by Per Kristiansson (7-kyu), who was number three on the list of substitute players for the play-off. The play-off thinking time was two hours plus 1 minute byo-yomi and the winner became the first ever ruling Swedish Champion. The favourite of the play-off was Carl Johan Nilsson (1-dan), who recently won British Open with a perfect score of six points out of six. He was already qualified for the best-of-five games final match. Karl Johan Moberg (1-kyu) is an International Master of chess, who has frequently taken part in our shogi events in Goteborg. Martin Danerud (1-dan) played shogi frequently during his post-doc year in Tokyo in 1994. He founded the Swedish Shogi Federation two years ago and is still its first president. On the first day, Kristiansson lost to Danerud, who was then eliminated by Moberg. The final match became a tough battle. On the second day, Nilsson and Moberg won one game each. On the third day, Nilsson won the morning game. In the evening game both players were heading for a jishogi position after 199 shogi moves. Then it was late night and we had to leave the venue. So, the game was declared a draw, and the ten minutes plus 1 minute byo-yomi replay was won by Moberg. In the fifth and final game, Karl Johan Moberg turned the tables in a brilliant byo-yomi game. Throughout the entire play-off, he was the strongest and most lucky player in byo-yomi.
