From: DANERUD MARTIN TELIA COM> Date: 7 may 1999 Subject: Stockholm vs Goteborg Dear shogi friends, Thursday evening, a consultation game between Stockholm and Goteborg was played via Java Shogi in order to celebrate the breaking of the 100 members limit by the Swedish Shogi Federation. The Goteborg team consisted of seven players, where the top rated players were Carl Johan Nilsson (1-dan) and Martin Danerud (1-dan). The other Goteborg players were Anders Vidal, Jan Palmgren, Mikael Jansson, Anders Sandberg, and Joachim Brolin. The Stockholm team consisted of eight players, and it contained some top kyu players. The thinking time was 1 hour + 60 s byo-yomi for each team. This proved to be something great! I can really recommend an event like this. The higher rated players have to explain their way of thinking, and the lower rated players can check their ideas about the position directly. In the Goteborg team we had an intensive discussion, and ideas and recommendations were sometimes shouted loudly. Of course there may occur quite big mistakes in a game like this, but for many a kyu player it may still be the least erroneous game that they ever took part in. It will also be a variation compared to a normal evening at the shogi club. The Stockholm team made some early mistakes in the opening, and they actually never recovered. Nevertheless, it became a thrilling game, which was won by Goteborg after having played the last twenty moves in byo-yomi. And after all, in an event like this victory is maybe not the most essential thing... It seems that they are trying to reach a Yagura position, but this move quickly brings black in trouble. 5.- Px3g+ 6.Sx3g P'3f 7.S4f P4d 8.R3h P4e 9.Sx4e B5e 10.P'3c Rx3c 11.Sx3f P'3g 12.Rx3g Bx3g+ 13.Nx3g Rx3f 14.N4e S4b Around this difficult position Goteborg spent almost all its remaining thinking time. Black is trying to strike back with the attacking knight, and the white attack will not be able to win the game directly. So, the team decided to allow one move in the defence before the attack against the black king will be launched. 15.P6e R3g+ 16.Bx1a+ R'2h 17.P'3h +Rx4g 18.L'4h +Rx3h 19.Gx3h Rx3h+ 20.B'4i Another mistake by the Stockholm team. The bishop is a far too valuable piece for a drop only as a defender in a position like this. And still, it does not even defend the lance. 20.- +R3i 21.Nx5c+ P'4g 22.+Nx4b Gx4b 23.G5h Px4h+ 24.Gx4h P'4g 25.Gx4g G'6i 26.Kx6i +Rx4i 27.G'5i S'5h 27.- +Rx4g would give black time to build up a defence around the king. The silver drop removes the protecting generals around the king. 28.K7h Sx5i 29.Sx5i +Rx5i 30.R'3a L'4a 31.R3h+ B'4i 32.+Rx4i +Rx4i 33.P'4c +R5h 34.K7g R'7h 35.K6f R76h+ 36.K5f Gx4c 37.B'2e S'3d 38.B3f N'4d 39.+Bx4d Gx4d 40.K4f B'5e 41.K5f G'6f 0-1 Sincerely yours, Dr. Martin Danerud President of the Swedish Shogi Federation
