From: Manabu Terao JAPAN SUN COM> Date: 7 may 1999 Subject: Shogi strength drill - #26 Dear Shogi Fans, Here is Problem #26. Manabu Terao(on behalf of ISPS) Problem #26 Now White just advance the Pawn to 7e. Don't you have to capture it by Px7e? No, you do not have to. There will be a counterattacking tesuji. 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | wL | wN | | | | | | | | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | wR | | | wG | | | | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | wP | | | | | | c +--------------------------------------------| | wP | | | wS | wP | | | | | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | wP | | | | | | | e +--------------------------------------------+ | bP | | bP | bP | bP | | | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | bP | | bS | | | | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | bG | | bG | | | | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | | | bL | bN | bK | | | | | | | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ Problem #26 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | wL | wN | | | | | | | | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | P | | | wR | | | wG | | | | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | wP | | | | | | c +--------------------------------------------| | wP | | | | wP | | | | | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | bP | wS | | | | | | e +--------------------------------------------+ | bP | | | | bP | | | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | bP | | bS | | | | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | bG | | bG | | | | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | P | | bL | bN | bK | | | | | | | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ The answer is : P6e, Sx6e, Px7e Point : "Tsukichigai" against "Fugoshi Gin" Responding to White's P7e by Px7e is a novice move since it will allow White's Silver to advance easily by Sx7e. It will be hard for Black to defend White's climing-Silver-like attack. A Silver located one square ahead of a Pawn like S6d in the Problem diagram is called "Fugoshi Gin". It's rather easy to give a pressure on "Fugoshi Gin" Black's P6e against White's P7e is a right move. If White send the Silver diagonally back, you can gain a Pawn for nothing and the 7th and 8th files' vanguard pawn will give you a big advantage. If White captures the Pawn by Sx6e. then capturing the Pawn on 7e will be a good move aiming at P*6f to kill the White's Silver on 6e. If White moves P5e from the answer diagram, just taking it by Px5e still keep you the chance to kill the Silver by P*6f. This is a tesuji called "Tsukichigai" considering that White's P*6f will be an illegal move since there is a Pawn on 6c.
