If I'm helping a beginner learn the game, I will play right through the losing situation (hopefully I'm giving a big handicap if I'm losing.... ), not so much to hope they miss it, as to make them go through the actual thought process of checkmate. If they do miss it, we just go back to that time in the game later and replay it. Because of the many intricate endgame options, I prefer to let beginners work through it over the board in a game situation. If I'm playing and equal or stronger opponent and I'm in the losing position, I will usually play the situation out for a little while. In a tournament hoping for a mistake in time trouble possibly. But if I've already calculated the mating sequence and they follow it for a move or two, I'll resign. If it's a casual game, I will play the situation through, but I will look to find the checkmate that is going to be used against me. It's still a good checkmate exercise for me. Sometimes even though I know I'm losing, I don't see the mating sequence. Then I will play it through until I see how the mate will work out. I seldom play on the internet servers. Generally when I have, if I get into a poor position I'll just resign. I find I concentrate much worse when I'm playing on a computer, rather than over an actual board. Tony
