It followed some standard rules which were not as some participants expected. The chosen player had previously beaten really strong players including George F. I gather that the intent of the tournament was to have someone represent the States in the tournament and that person had to meet certain criterion; an appropriate candidate was thus chosen. Perhaps other tournaments will use other criterion;.e.g, just the winner getting the prize. Of course how to fairly conduct strategy game tournaments has longed puzzled me but i understand there are several perfectly valid approaches. Anway this issue has been beaten to death ... (Most of us who are tired of it; especially for those of us who aren't American as several members have pointed out. Anyway even Sam has let the issue die and pursued other topics.)
