There are three clear paths to become 8dan according to Nihon Shogi Renmei's web site in Japanese(http://www.shogi.or.jp/question/question.htm) 1, Becoming a top 2 in B1 league of Junisen to upgrade A class. 2, Becoming a Ryuo title holder for one period(a year). 3, Winning 190 games after becoming 7 dan. Thus, I understand Fujii will become 8 dan when next Ryuo title match occures according to the second path, regardless whether he succeeds in defending the title or not. Manabu Terao
