From: Odd Vidar Bakkejord HOTMAIL COM> Date: 3 jun 1999 Subject: Report from Oslo, Norway Report on the 1.st Nordic Championship held 29. and 30. May 1999; Hello! Oluf has sent out a result overview. I will give some more information about the tournament here; There were 4 teams participating in the team tournament. Each teams had 4 players. The teams: (Norwegian players with fore-names and aliases) (Swedish players with surnames, not all mentioned here) 1.Oslo (Oluf table 1, Terje table 2, Jarl-Ove table 3, Antji table 4) 2.Gothenburg (Moberg, Nilsson, Danerud, Sødergaard 3.Stockholm 1 (Hartmann on table 1!) 4.Mixed team (3 from Stockholm 2, and Erlend Bore from Norway table 3) Vidar Gundersen withdrew from the tournament to sacrifice himself to the benefit of even numbers for the teams. (strong Norwegian player) Unforunatly there were no Finnish or Danish team participating. --- There were played 3 rounds. Oluf won all his games. He beat both Moberg and Hartmann, both international masters of chess (IM), a formal title og excellent proof of strength in chess. Erlend Bore (Norway) played as mentioned on a mixed team; Erlend Bore beat Martin Danerud in an incredible game! Erlend hadn't played shogi for more than a half year. He had a tremendous comeback. He went forth with byo-yomi on his side, and Danerud with 14 minutes left on his clock, and he won! Danerud was amazed! Erlend Bore also won his other game against Swedes. But he lost against Jarl-Ove Staurnes, when mixed team met Oslo team. Jarl Ove won two of his games. Antji Rapmund won one game, and I think Terje Christophersen tried hard but I'm not sure if he won... (don't recall!) All the rounds were played on Saturday. The best team was the Gothenburg team winning 3-1 against Oslo. Oslo won 3-1 against Stockholm. And the mixed team against Oslo resulted 2-2. In the evening we had a very pleasent party at Chateau Neuf, the student castle of Oslo with music , beer, analysis, no dace and no girls! (too bad!), but we had Playstation ( I just bought it!) and Internet. We use a Japanese CD called Kanzawishogi95. Has a nice interface and quite strong skill. On Sunday we played blitz shogi (7 minutes each + 30 sec byo-yomi) Carl Johan Nilsson from Gothenburg outclassed everyone winning 11 games. Oluf did not play because he was the arbitor and tournament administrator. I came almost last what a pity! (chinchinrorin syndrome!?) Also to be mentioned is that Jarl-Ove and Vidar Gundersen hosted each their team for accomodation. The Stockholm team stayed with Vidar, and the Gothenburg team with Jarl-Ove. And every player from Sweden were in private accomodation. We soon hope to see some of the games in the Swedish homepage, or in The Norwegian ShogiDatabase. It is located here for your information. It is not totally updated for Norwegian played games, but it is a very worth while page to take a look at http://www.consilio.oslo.no/~jos/shogi/NSDB/ Also Jarl Ove Staurnes is involved in the programming of Shockyx, an xshogi interface for the shocky program. Take a look at the current version; http://www.consilio.oslo.no/~jos/shogi/shockyx/ That was some additional information from Norway, stay tuned! Odd Vidar Bakkejord reporting on this event.
