Manabu Terao(on behalf of ISPS) Problem #11 There is good move without escaping the promoted Rook(2c). G*4b will be followed by Sx4b and you will lose attacking position. 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | | | | | | | wK | wN | wL | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | wG | | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | |+bP | | wS |+bR | wP | c +--------------------------------------------| | | | | | | wP | wP | | | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | e +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | | | | | | | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ |G | | | | | | | | | | | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ Answer #11 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | | | | | | | wK | wN | wL | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | wG | | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | | |+bP | wS |+bR | wP | c +--------------------------------------------| | | | | | | wP | wP | | | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | e +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | | | | | | | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ |G | | | | | | | | | | | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ The correct answer is +P4c. Point : A clever move that make the opponent's Gold more diagonally and out of a defending position" An escape of the promoted Rook would be a useless move. After +P4c, Gx4c will be followed by G*3b, checkmate. If the opponent takes your Rook(Gx2c), you can check mate by G*3b, too. You know a Gold cannot move diagonally back. Having known the answer, you can see it is never a difficult move. Because you have only one Gold, +P4c is a good move. If you had two golds, you could check mate in the following sequence; G*4a,Kx4a,+Rx2a,G*3a,Gx5b.
