From: Steve Evans NETSPACE NET AU> Date: 21 feb 1999 Subject: Solution to Chu Shogi Problem D86 Chu Shogi fans, Here are solutions to another of the "D" document problems in the Middle Shogi Manual for which no solution had previously been recorded. The first solution was found using my Zillions-of-Games based computer program (checks and some sidelines by Colin Adams). 1. +B-11g, +FLx11g (if Kx11g 2. SM-5a+, +RC-6b; 3. +SMx6b mate) (if K-11i 2. +B-11h, K-11j/K-12j 3. +Bx12i mate); 2. +Bx11g, Kx11g (if K-11i 3. +B-11h K-11j/K-12j, +Bx12i mate); 3. SM-5a+, +RC-6b; 4. +SMx6b mate. Colin Adams found this alternative first move, which leads to a similar solution (after corrections by me): 1. SM-5a+, +FL-11g (best, if K-11i; 2. +G-11a, K-1j; 3.+SM-4b and mate follows easily after the intercepts) 2. +B12fx11g, K-11i 3. +B-11h, K-11j 4. +Bx12i mate. Note that in both solutions, several of the pieces are completely irrelevant, which makes us suspicious of this problem. Steve Evans
