Satoshi Nagaura ----- Article From Shogi Sekai March'99 Edition ---------- The Record of My Fierce Games - Describe my 40 years' tracks inscribed on the shogi board By Hifumi Kato (9-dan) The 40th Ohi Championship: Black-Tsuneo Kikuchi White-Hifumi Kato (Ranging Rook vs. Climbing Silver) The Memory of Ohi Championship I have played games in Ohi Championship many times. At the 25th Ohi Championship held in 1984, I played the title match with Takahashi Ohi Holder, my being the challenger. After completing the first 5 games, I won 2 and lost 3. However, I acquired "Ohi" title, beating him twice consecutively after then. The 7th 10-dan Championship was also in such a way that I won the 6th and 7th games and acquired the title. At the 6th game of this 10-dan championship, I won after defeat seemed certain because Ohyama 10-dan holder did not become aware that I would be checkmated. I was also not aware of the checkmate. This game was the only one in which Mr.Ohyam missed checkmate while the checkmate actually existed. Although Mr.Ohyama believed that he would definitely win that game with a brinkmate, I overcame it. Because he made the brinkmate to me although he could make a checkmate to me, it might be inevitable to change the places of winner and loser. The final 7th game between Mr.Takahashi(Ohi Title Holder) and myself on the Ohi Championship was very hot. At the game on September 21, 1984, we came cross Diagram-A as below: (Diagram-A) White in hand: P 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +---------------------------+ |wL * * * * * * wN wL |a | * wR * * wS * wG wK * |b | * * wN * * wG * wP wP |c |wP * wP wB wP wS wP * * |d | * wP * wP * bN bP bP bP |e |bP * bP * bP bS * * * |f |bS bP bN bG bB * * bR * |g | * bK bG * * * * * * |h |bL * * * * * * * bL |i +---------------------------+ Black in hand: P2 $B8e (B $B$^$G (B I had played with Mr.Kikuchi once before, and I lost it then. In that game he dexterously drove my king into a corner with firing good moves in the stage of endgame even though his king was thin. I thought Mr.Kikuchi was a person who did not care much about collapsing his camp a bit. Mr.Kikuchi took Black and Ranging Rook with Rb-6h. Agaist this, I aimed to take quick attack. 13.B-7g P-8e 14.P-9f S-7c 15.L-9h S-8d 16.R-7h (DIAGRAM-2) P-6d (DIAGRAM-2) White: Hifumi Kato White in hand: nothing 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +---------------------------+ |wL wN * * * * * wN wL |a | * wR * * wG wG wK wB * |b |wP * * wP wS wP * wP * |c | * wS wP * wP * wP * wP |d | * wP * * * * * * * |e |bP * bP bP bP * * * bP |f | * bP bB bS * bP bP bP * |g |bL * bR * bG * bS bK * |h | * bN * * * bG * bN bL |i +---------------------------+ Black: Tsuneo Kikuchi Black in hand: nothing up to 16.
