The kanji seem really old and/or really obselete, because they aren't in my kanji dictionary...strangely enough a lot contain radical 196 (the kanji for bird), so I assume these pieces are some form of bird. The second kanji for the "whale" piece, which leads me to believe its more than just a plain old whale, isn't in my dictionary, either. Things have really become a mess in the promotion department, but I've reasonably gotten English equivalents of most of the starting pieces, except maybe 5 or 6.
