My program also supports the large format, but I guess this is not really
practical for the larger variants. The only option for Tai would probably be
to use something like the small format but with upper and lower case piece
abbreviations instead of "b" and "w" prefixes to indicate the side that the
piece belongs to. This would save another 25 characters in width.  But, as
you say, these small format diagrams are not for everyone.
