I think one of the reasons for the high numbers of Shogi players found
on-line, as opposed to the lower number of Chess players, is that Chess
players are more readily found in the neighborhood or local community than
Shogi players.  It is much easier to find a place and a partner with whom to
play Chess than it is to play Shogi.  This would be especially true for
those who can not travel so readily.  Today, the computer enables the
popularity of Shogi to spread, whereas Chess is already out there.
