From: Ralf Lundberg CS CHALMERS SE> Date: 2 dec 1999 Subject: Playing through firewalls As far as I understand neither of the sites JavaShogi, ShogiDojo and the new Mindsports site supports play from sites behind firewalls. I think it should be considered normal for companies to have firewalls (my current as well as my previous employer use them). Some may be able to pursuade their system managers to open up the ports required, but that would lower protection and is a litle bit against the idea of firewalls. So, it would be desireable for all such sites to provide a way to play through firewalls. For what I have heard there are ways to do that, by using ports that are normally open, especially the http port. However this of course takes some extra effort. Also, some applets for viewing game databases seems not to work from behind firewalls, but others do. So, by this mail I am pleading implementors of such sites to give this a thought. You may get some extra visitors by doing so. My guess is that quite a lot of people are behind firewalls, but I am not sure. Has anyone some esimate of how common this is? And, finally a remark about a topic brought up some time ago by a similar question.. Yes, I should rather play at home than at work. But it whould be interesting to check out sites that I cannot use from home. (The MSO site for instance currently requires a windows platform, which I currently do not have at home.) And it may be worth to stay some evening to play. Also some get their private interet access through their companies. -- ___________________________________________________________________ Ralf Lundberg http://www.cd.chalmers.se/~ralf/index.html ralf carmenta se (email home: cs chalmers se)
