Manabu Terao(on behalf of ISPS) Problem #23 This problem is the position right after P1e and Px1e. Black has 3 Pawns in hand. There must be something effective if you have 3 Pawns in hand. You should have an eye on the edge. 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | | | | | | wK | | | wL | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | wG | wB | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | | wP | wS | wN | wP | | c +--------------------------------------------| | | | | | | wP | wP | | | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | wP | e +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | bP | bP | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | bP | bS | bN | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | | | | | | bR | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | PPP | | | | | | | | | | bL | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ Answer #23 9 8 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 +--------------------------------------------+ White in hand: | | | | | | wK | | | | a +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | PPP | | | | | | | | wG | wB | | b | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ | | | | | wP | wS | wN | wP | | c +--------------------------------------------| | | | | | | wP | wP | | bR | d +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | | | | wP | e +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | | bP | bP | | | f +--------------------------------------------+ | | | | | bP | bS | bN | | | g +--------------------------------------------+ Black in hand: | | | | | | | | | | h +------------------+ +--------------------------------------------+ | LP | | | | | | | | | | bL | i | | +--------------------------------------------+ +------------------+ The answer is P*1c, Lx1c, P*1d, Lx1d, P*2d, Px2d, Rx2d, P*2c, Rx1d. Point : There must be something in the edge if you have 3 Pawns in hand. The proveb say "There must be somthing in the edge if you have 3 Pawns in hand." The position is right after P1e and Px1e. The one who drops a Pawn on 1d and then makes his Lance run by Lx1e is a beginner. He will be annoyed by White's defending response of P*1b. Drop a Pawn on 1c. If White neglect it, your Lx1e aiming at P1b+ will be fine. If White respond it by Bx1c, Lx1e will encourage Black. After White respond your P*1c by Lx1c, make the Lance isolated to Lx1d by sacrificing a Pawn of P*1d and capture it by the sequence of P*2d, Px2d, Rx2d, P*2c and Rx1d which will promises you to promote the Rook by R1b+. This is the tactic of activating a Rook both vertically and horizontally. If you think of the tactic showed in the answer at a glance, you are no longer a beginner. End
