From: Phil Holland HOLLANDNUMERICS DEMON CO UK> Date: 25 sep 1998 Subject: Re: Dancing Shogi Piece Doug, In a Swiss tournament everyone starts with 0 points (wins) and are paired up randomly. The next round starts by sorting everyone by points score and then pairing them up by nearest score, etc, etc. In Shogi most regular players have grades (15-kyu to 1-kyu, 1-dan to 6-dan). In a Swiss/McMahon tournament everyone starts with their official grade and are paired off against nearest grade players. Each win (for the tournament only!) improves the winner's grade by 1 level and the players are resorted and paired as before. I've been organising Swiss/McMahon tournaments for 15 years now, and have recently developed computer programs (in QBasic and VB4) to help me, and to allow me to play in the tournaments too, without risking accusations of fixing the draw in my own favour! Once I'm happy with them, and have written some instructions on how to run the programs, I'll put them on my web site.
