From: Manabu Terao JAPAN SUN COM> Date: 25 nov 1998 Subject: Re: Ranging Rook and Bishop Exchange There are lot of Raging Rook openings which do not fear bishop exchange as below although most of them are rather minor openings to professional players these days. Central Rook --- Shape of S4c and G3b Silver on the Horns Kondo-ryu 'Gokigen'(cheerful) Central Rook Side Pawn vs Central Rook Flatfish('Hirame') and so on 4th file Rook --- Tateishi ryu and so on 3rd file Rook --- Masuda's Ishida-ryu and so on Opposing Rook --- Masuda-ryu Sakata-ryu and so on One of my shogi friends who is a strong amateur ranging rook player said. "Bishop exchange gets Ranging Rook disadvantage only when it will let Static Rook achieve a breakthrough of his Rook head." I agree with him. I think the proverb "Against the ranging rook aim at bishop exchange" has been out of fashion a bit since Masuda invented a lot of Ranging Rook openings more than 30 year before. Manabu Terao
