Yes, it was played on Richard's play-by-email server.

But there are also other play by e-mail servers. Mine, for example,
supports Shogi, MiniShogi, ChuShogi (including Dai, and optional drops),
YariShogi, ProgressiveShogi, ProgressiveChuShogi (also with ProgressiveDai
and optional drops), and am implementing ToriShogi. Besides, there are
non-shogi games too!

to get started.
