From: Reijer Grimbergen ETL GO JP> Date: 30 jun 1998 Subject: Amateur Ryu-O Hi all, Because the Chinese player that was invited by Yomiuri could not participate in this weekend's Amateur Ryu-O tournament, I was invited to take his place. I had played in the tournament before in 1993, when I lost both games in the pre-rounds. This time it went better, because I managed to win a game! Admittedly, I played one of the weakest players in the tournament, the representative from Okinawa (a small group of islands of the main coast of Japan). Before beating Yamanoha from Okinawa, I lost against Fujimoto, a former 1-kyu Shoreikai from Fukuoka (I was better in the middle game, but impatience became my undoing again). I was secretly hoping to become the first non-Japanese player to reach the knock-out finals, but unfortunately I had to play the winner of last year, Watanabe, in the decisive game. It was an interesting game, where in the end the difference in strength became obvious and I lost badly after missing my only chance to keep it close. The tournament was won by former Amateur Meijin Hayasaki from Oita, who beat Hayashi from Shizuoka in the final. This is just a preliminary report. I intend to write a long report with my games and comments in a couple of weeks and send it to Shogi-L.
