From: Pieter Stouten DUPONTMERCK COM> Date: 16 jun 1998 Subject: Pan-Atlantic Shogi Championship (PASC) - update Several people have requested clarification of the format of the first ever Pan-Atlantic Shogi Championship (PASC, 24-27 August 1998, Royal Festival Hall, London, England) and especially of the way it ties in with the America-Europe team championship. There is only one tournament, the Pan-Atlantic Shogi Championship. The America-Europe team championship is *NOT* a separate tournament. All the games between Americans and Europeans that are played during the first 5 rounds are considered part of the America-Europe team championship. Adding up the results of these games will give the result of the team championship. A regular Swiss system is employed for the pairings, but the pairings of the first 5 rounds are biased so that Americans play against Europeans as much as possible during these rounds. This is done so that 1) many games will count for the team championship, 2) it is more attractive for Americans to make the trip, 3) establishing a unified ratings list is facilitated. The PASC playing schedule is as follows: round 1: Monday, August 24, 4 PM round 2: Monday, August 24, 6 PM round 3: Tuesday, August 25, 10 AM round 4: Tuesday, August 25, 12 noon round 5: Tuesday, August 25, 4 PM round 6: Tuesday, August 25, 6 PM round 7: Wednesday, August 26, 10 AM round 8: Wednesday, August 26, 12 noon round 9: Wednesday, August 26, 4 PM round 10/semi-finals: Wednesday, August 26, 6 PM final: Thursday, August 27, 10 AM prize giving: Thursday, August 27, 1 PM The four best "western" players after round 9 will advance to the semi-finals and final. All other players play one more regular round (10). On Thursday morning only the final and the 3rd place game will take place. All other players can watch these games. Hopefully, the final will be telecast to a separate analysis room, but it is not known yet if this is feasible.
