From: Doug Whipple ESKIMO COM> Date: 3 jun 1998 Subject: Re: Shogi in the Pacific Northwest Hi Ben, I am not too sure what still exists. I have heard that they still play Shogi at the new Last Exit (above 50th on the Ave) and at the new Chess Club in Seattle. Unfortuneatly, I got married and have not played regularly for quite some time. I played in the club off and on from 1981 or so, until about 1990 (with some lapses). It is really too bad that Jim was so involved that he let himself get so emotional about the whole thing. I met George Hodges and several of his cronies on numerous occasions. I thought he was a total jerk and a major racist besides. Were you around when Oyama played here. That was a great evening. He was a very gracious man. I got to play him one game (at 2 piece).. The last I heard, Mr. Miyagi and several of the Japanese were still very active, and a couple of the Caucasian players -- Russel ( I forget his last name) and a couple others. Take care, Doug Whipple
